How reading can help you learn English

1. Read at least one new page daily Hungry to learn?

Feel your curiosity to understand the language by reading small easy stories. Make sure you read one new page daily if you don’t have a habit of reading. Start small. Push yourself to read a new page daily for 3-4 days and then 2 new pages and so on. Build this habit. It is going to help you in multiple ways.

2. Repeat reading some same pages every day.

While you start picking up the reading habit, you will find there are some pages, paragraphs you love and won’t mind reading again. Mark those pages. Read daily. Set aside a time when you are tired or feel like relaxing and read these pages over and over again. You will enjoy it and your brain will easily register what you read. That’s a trick. You will not forget those sentence structures, words, the flow of language.

3. Pick up an easy book of your present reading level

Reading won’t be enjoyable if you don’t understand what you are reading. Get some books written for children or read sample chapters online to find out books of your present reading level. Some books you can start with are The Alchemist, Little Women, Ruskin Bond -stories for children.

4. Conversation – dialogues

Focus on the dialogues. You will learn ways to speak, to call someone, to express happiness, anger and other emotions. Read and imagine yourself saying those dialogues. Then,look away from the book and try to say the dialogues. Try to give expressions like an actress would. It’s fun! This will make you sound more confident when you speak in English.

5. Read and think – memorize nice sentences that you like.

Get a highlighter or a pencil(I prefer pencil)and mark your favourite sentences, beautiful descriptions you liked, note down the page numbers and read so regularly that you memorize those parts. Yes, sounds like a nursery kid but it is worth the effort. You would slowly understand what makes a sentence sound good and grammatically correct. But before that, you would understand the essence of the language.
